Art Letters

November 21, 2024

Last week, I got to take part in Career Day at my son’s school. I spoke of being a professional artist - by way of engineering - and the multitude of paths available to us. An element I kept returning to (equally in parts to remind myself) was the thought that what marks a professional artist - more than money, output, followers, supplies or time - is the commitment to sharing their work. Unlike the other elements, sharing our work is the piece we can control.

I continue to find, more than creating the work, the sharing to be the most vulnerable. This applies across a variety of creative pursuits - whether baking, gardening, cooking, coaching, decorating, hosting - sharing our curiosities and creativities is an act of courage, love and generosity. Thank you to those sharing your creativity (with plenty of self-permission for imperfection) this season. It’s a powerful gift.

I recently got to visit with Adriana Lopez from NBC about the impact of exploring and sharing our curiosities and creativities. I hope you’ll enjoy this quick watch.

While on the show, Adriana invited me to showcase my collection of silk scarves. Inspired by my Mom’s love of scarves, and her history with scarves growing up in Croatia, I originally began transferring a selection of my paintings to silk, five years ago.

My Mom, Ana, shares her love of scarves and tips on how to artfully tie them (video)

Since then, I’m proud to have grown the Mione Scarves collection, one by one. (Thank you Rox and Jenny for your partnership).

Most recently, I’ve added a new scarf to the group, based on my Ho’oponopono painting.

The making of the Ho’oponopono original painting, later transferred to silk

This piece feels especially meaningful to me at this time, as the Hawaiian phrase Ho’oponopono (pronounced ho-oh-pono-pono) translates to “Thank you, I love you, I’m sorry, I forgive you.” Four phrases I’ve been getting reps in expressing, especially to myself.
