Art Letters

I came across it on his desk, the notepad holder and handwriting so familiar as a child, as I’d watch him jot down important reminders. Now containing something unknown - a quote I’d never heard.

“Everyday do something generous, creative, and foolish.”

Something generous.

Understood. Something he tried to practice throughout his life.

Something creative.

I remember his worry when I left my safe, secure and stable engineering career. Seeing now his regard for creativity is a hug.

Something foolish.

A visceral pause, followed by a slow spreading smile as I considered the most unexpected of the words my father had noted.

What did ‘something foolish’ mean to him? What does it mean to me now?

On a cross-state drive, filling the time with these questions, my thoughts were eventually interrupted by a radio gem. A song my father loved.

I listened, but mostly I looked, intrigued by the album cover.

What was initially hidden, I now couldn’t unsee.

F.

The perfect way to remember his reminder.

To do something Foolish.
