Earlier this year, the team at Mammogram Poster Girls reached out to me to help create a work in support of their mission to provide mammograms and breast cancer early detection initiatives for women in need. I’m deeply moved by their efforts to create a more just and equitable society through the health and care of women. When I started brainstorming this painting, I remembered a conversation I had with two of my close friends last year. We were talking about working during the pandemic and how it changed the way we dress and the ways we approach our work. That we were no longer wearing these uncomfortable underwire bras, that we had all switched to sports bras. We wanted to be presentable on a zoom call but also go for a walk on a break. We wanted to be able to move from function to function without any hinderance. It made me think of a joke from high school about bras being called ‘over-the-shoulder-boulder-holders’. It strikes me now that we referred to our breasts as boulders. Instead, I want to celebrate our bodies - free from comparison and judgment - and the boulders we pursue. The bold goals we want to accomplish, the opportunities we want to take advantage of, the ways we want to support ourselves and our families. I am pleased to donate a portion of the proceeds from this new original painting, as well as this new collection of scarves and pocket squares, to Mammogram Poster Girls, to help fund mammograms for women in need.
