Letting Nature In

Each spring, my son and I have been planting seeds, in hopes for a summer of abundance and color. This year, our sunflowers have taken to new heights, this one upwards of 8 feet tall! It’s inspired the artwork my 5 yr-old son proudly created above, of the center of a sunflower, the florets making a Fibonacci spiral. Nature and science, art and math - always connected!

Notes all Around

Last week I had the pleasure of hanging my work, from studio easel, into my home. I placed the paintings where their reminders, their notes, could inspire myself and my family.

Notes to choose curiosity over judgment
To listen with silence and intent
To claim our ability in the face of vulnerability
To make and take time to wander, without aim or agenda, in the hopes of being led to wonder.

I look forward to sharing and extending these works, from my home to yours.

In a quote by Walt Whitman, (by way of Ted Lasso!) he says to “be curious, not judgmental.” I hadn’t considered before how those two words could be related, but I’m now taking advantage of opportunities where judgment creeps in - either of myself or others - to actively practice replacing it with curiosity.

I recently heard that LISTEN and SILENT share the same letters.

Now that we are able to reunite with friends, I’m practicing listening, in silence, to hear their spoken words alongside their unspoken essence.

Inspired by the card catalog used in my elementary school library. I can still hear our Librarian saying “shhhh”.

Before heading into, or out to, something challenging, I remind myself of the able part. Of the ability inherent in our vulnerability.

I wake in the morning to the reminder to make time to wander - free of destination or agenda - except the hope of being led to wonder. To beauty waiting to be held. To answers waiting to be found.

I’m beginning the research and ever-present joy of collecting ideas, questions and desires for my next set of work. Out wandering(!), I came across these two books, which not only their contents, but their covers, are filling me with inspiration. I look forward to sharing more with you this Fall!

This photo, from Elle Decor, stopped me in my tracks, and found me in tears. To see an artist, continuing to create and surround herself with beauty, color and inspiration, is the epitome of goals for me, and my work.
