We Can!

“We Can” 36x36 on Canvas, sold

This week I hit a wall in the midst of quarantine - so similar to the feeling of being in mile 18 of a marathon - where all your resolve comes to test, and all the work leading up to this point comes into question. Can I do the thing I’ve been training for - can I conquer my own mind? How can I do more than escape frustration, but turn this into something positive? That’s a harder task - the act of acceptance - but I’m reminded that we can, in fact, do hard things.

In this book I’m currently devouring, the author sees the words “We Can Do Hard Things” written in a school classroom. It became her motto, and now my family’s. It inspired me to paint this new piece, and to keep trying to do the hard thing again, day by day.

Fresh off the Easel

“Holding loose the delicate strings bearing heavy things. Active in effort to attract desires while willingly waiting their landing. Flexible in approach, steadfast in the wish.”

Home Sweet Gnome

My Brother, who is also an artist, recently challenged me with the task of painting three pieces simultaneously. Normally I prefer to work on one piece at a time, and wait until its complete to begin a new work. This new approach of working concurrently - while not without its challenges - helped me develop a broader story for one of my favorite characters - which has some friends asking if the gnome is me! Could it be? ;-)

New Scarf Takes Flight

I really thought about not releasing this scarf, not now, in all of this. But I slowly realized that all of this is exactly what this painting, this scarf is about. Being in it, in the obstacle, in the middle of the hard thing, and somehow, even still, holding on to hope that it is temporary, that it is not forever, that the dark cocoon is turning us into something more beautiful. And we will someday, in some near or even distant future, emerge.

My wish with this scarf, is for hope, through the mail and onto your shoulders. The lightest thing they’ll carry in the day.

I’m proud and honored to share with you my newest, limited edition silk scarf, “Emerge”
