“Not everything in your life, Mione, can be A to Z. Some things are gonna get messy. You might go from a C to a V, and then T all the way to B. Things are still moving forward, just maybe not in the path you thought it would take.”

My brother, on a recent phone call after listening to my pervading self-doubt.

A to Z.

How much I crave a clean path, an even cleaner finish. What if there’s no true finish? What if the path doesn’t look like a path at all? Where’s it going? And can I handle the in between?

I didn't want to forget his words. I wanted to see the movement he described between seemingly disconnected points.

So I began dividing my canvas to equally space the letters of our alphabet. But they didn’t fit. Not how I wanted. An even division of 4 equal sides not our alphabet’s fate.

No matter the configurations I tried, the A and Z repeatedly the outliers. “But they’re the most important ones. The beginning and the end.”

I questioned. Do we ever go all the way back to the beginning? Are we not at least slightly changed? Clearer eyes. A more understanding heart. A less fearful mind.

And what about the ending? Does it exist? Or are there ever present opportunities to learn, to evolve, to grow. Will I make it to the end of this present challenge? Can I handle if there isn’t an end? No photo finish. No tied up loose ends. But clean somehow amidst the acknowledged mess. Clean enough.

Suddenly, the A and Z become superfluous.

Omitted.

Now free from fear of zero or destination alike, I began to weave, letter to distant letter, until the path emerged of it’s own volition. In it’s negative space, revealed something tiny but pure. A perfectly imperfect diamond at its core.
